Wall Street and
Veterans Field
You are invited to meet some of the people and explore places from Hebron’s past along Wall Street. This child and family friendly QR tour can be done in any order. Each site is a short walk from here.
On this trail you will learn about Yankees and African Americans from Hebron’s past. By the mid 1700’s Hebron farmers were selling crops, livestock and wood to merchants who would ship these goods to the West Indies. In return Connecticut residents imported sugar, molasses and slaves. As late as 1822, Hebron farmers were still shipping livestock to the West Indies, but had added New York City and Boston as destinations for their livestock. Money gained from this trade would change the appearance of Hebron.
In order to participate in global trade, Hebron farmers need a way to get their produce to market. Route 316 was established in the early 1700’s to provide a way for Andover residents to attend religious services in Hebron Center. It also linked Hebron residents with the Boston Post Road that ran through Andover.
Over the years Route 316 has had many names such as Wall Street and the Highway to Andover. For much of the 20th century Route 316 was known as Wall Street, but it is not known exactly when or why this name was applied to the Road to Andover.
Think about it
Roads and highways developed after English settlement. In the 1700’s most roads were designated as highways to other places. In the 1800’s turnpikes were known by their final destination. In the 20th century more picturesque names were applied to older roads.
The Highway to Colchester became Church Street. The old road to Marlborough became Marjorie Circle. As a result of the Eisenhower administration’s emphasis on American infrastructure roads were also given numbers like Route 85 or Route 66. As Hebron developed into a suburb, some roads were named after the developers’ family. How many roads in Hebron can you name that fit within these categories?
